Yanmar Co., Ltd. is a Japanese diesel engine manufacturer based in Osaka that was founded in 1912. Yanmar was the first to produce a small horizontal diesel engine.
Yanmar's story began in 1912, when Magokichi Yamaoka founded the Yanmar Agricultural Machinery Company in Osaka, Japan. Yamaoka was an innovative thinker who developed some of the first gasoline-powered engines for use in farming equipment. He quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality products that were built to last.
During the Second World War, Yanmar was commissioned by the Japanese government to produce engines for military vehicles and aircraft. After the war ended, Yanmar shifted its focus back to agricultural machinery. In the 1950s, the company released its first tractor model, the YM135.
